AKNVAS is the New York label of Christian Juul Nielsen, a Danish-born designer who trained inside some of fashion's most demanding houses. He worked at Christian Dior under John Galliano and later Raf Simons, and at Oscar de la Renta, Nina Ricci, and Hervé Léger, where he became creative director in 2018.

A year later, in 2019, he launched AKNVAS, a name that is an anagram of the Danish word for canvas. He started the brand to have full creative control: "I decided to start my own brand with no merchandising team."

"How can I make someone look very relevant and cool?" Christian Juul Nielsen, to The Zoe Report.

Many AKNVAS pieces begin as fabric rather than sketches, cut and draped by hand. You can see it in the edit at Fashion Tastemakers: a strapless high-low taffeta gown in terracotta, a navy pinstripe mini skirt and double-breasted blazer dress, and a strapless denim corset built with couture structure.

AKNVAS presented its first New York Fashion Week runway show in September 2022, with Spring/Summer 2023, and returned for Spring/Summer 2025 with Nordic Midsummer Camp, a collection inspired by the whimsy of a Nordic summer. The label makes womenswear and menswear, and some pieces, like pants with an elastic waist, are cut to fit both.

AKNVAS is available now at Fashion Tastemakers.
